Reading Activities

During Reading we have a wide range of activities we can do to help our learning.  One of the literacy games we enjoy is called 'Silly Sentences.'  Here are some examples of the silly sentences we created last week.
 

Easter Bunny Descriptions

We wrote these great Easter Bunny descriptions a couple of weeks ago.  Mrs Robertson typed up our stories and we illustrated our own writing.

We had to use adjectives to describe what the Easter Bunny looks like.  We also had to use joining words (such as 'so', 'and', 'because', 'which', 'but')  to help add details

PLANTS

We watched an episode of the Magic School Bus which was all about what plants need to survive, the different functions of the parts of plants, and how plants make their own food. We made this poster afterwards which show all of the amazing facts that we learned.

Leaf Art- Positive & Negative Images

We made these leaf art pictures.  We drew half of a leaf and cut it out.  We flipped it over to form the other half.  We glued them onto another piece of paper.



Autumn Trees
Mrs Garden has been taking us for some very cool art when she has been relieving in the classroom.  First we had to dye the background using three different colours in a circular motion.  Then we had to draw some branches and blow blobs of black dye with a straw to make the extra leaves.   We haven't all  finished these yet....we can't wait until Mrs Garden is back in the class to finish them off and get them on the wall with some Autumn writing.

Writing Challenge #5

Your challenge is to write a story about this Easter Bunny.

Your challenge this week is to tell me what you can see through the binoculars!  Be as creative as you want!  Is it a dinosaur? The beach? A dragon?  The stars?

Science - Plants

We have started our Science unit which is about looking at history of plants in Christchurch and around Russley School.  Last week we went on a nature hunt around the school grounds spotting different trees.

Here are some of the plants we found around Russley School.

We discussed why plants and trees may have disappeared over the years.  We thought about animals eating leaves, people needing firewood and to build furniture, and that some areas needed to be cleared to make things like our school.


Today we drew the different leaves ourselves which we discovered on our Nature Walk.

Over the next few weeks we will look parts of plants and their functions and what they need to survive,

Butterflies!

Wintrow and Samantha have been bringing in chrysalises which they have found at home. We have found it very fascintating watching the chrysalis change from light green to dark green, and the to black. You can even see the wings through the chrysalis. Some of us were even lucky enough to see the butterfly hatch out. We know that the butterfly won't fly away straight away as its wings are wet and need to dry out.

Extra for experts: Use the joining words 'so'  and 'which'  to explain what the different body parts you have described are used for.

Ddak Ji with Sohee

Last week was out last week with Sohee, our student teacher from Gongju University in Korea.
Sohee helped us with our reading, writing, maths and other classroom activities. We will miss having her in our class!

Sohee shared a traditional Korean game with us called Ddak Ji which she used to play when she was at primary school.  She taught us how to make the game pieces needed and then two different ways to play the game;

1. We made our game pieces using two different colours of thick card.  We had to fold the two pieces in exactly the same way then fold them together to create the inter-lapping square.



2. We played the game in a group using several smaller ddak ji.  We had to take turns hitting the small one in the middle with our larger ddak ji pieces.  If you flipped the ddak ji over you would win that piece.  The winner was the person who collected the most small pieces.


3.  We played the game in pairs using only our ddak ji pieces. If you turned the other persons ddak ji over you were the winner and could keep their ddak ji piece.



4.  Sohee wrote our names on our game piece in Korean!

Daily Writing:
We write a story together each day before independently writing in our books
.  Mrs Robertson models some skills and we all contribute writing the story
and brainstorming ideas together.
We know that adjectives are describing words and help create a better picture in the authors mind.

Poetry
Every Friday we look at a different poem. 
We have learned that visualisation is an important skill involving 
seeing the pictures in your head when you read.
We look at rhyming words and spelling patterns within the poem.
We discuss what senses and interesting vocabulary the poet has used.

 

Kapa Haka 
 We go to Kapa Haka every Tuesday to learn different waiata and Maori dances.

Kelly Sports

Today Kelly Sports came to school.  We had a skills session involving netball passes, hitting with a cricket bat and lots of relay races.
